OAKLAND, Calif. -- Just hours after an Oakland City Council vote to add more officers to its police force, a neighborhood bus stop was riddled with gunfire early Wednesday leaving one person dead and another wounded. The death was the city's 28th homicide of the year, far outpacing last where there were 15 homicides by this date. The latest shooting took place at the corner of San Pablo and Brockhurst with officers responding to a "shots fired" call at 5:50 a.m.The officers found the ground around the bus stop littered with spent shell casings and one male victim dying. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.A second victim transported himself to an area hospital, according to officials. The extent of the victim's injuries was unknown. But the crime scene was one all too familiar in the East Bay city. In a late Tuesday night vote, the city council unanimously passed a plan proposed by Mayor Ron Dellums to hire more police officers. The $7.7 million funding for the plan will go to recruit and train more police officers as the city tries to fill the goal of having 803 officers on the force as required by a measure voters approved in 2004. Officials said the department is about 70 officers short of that goal. Officials say increasing the ranks of the department has been hampered by a shortage of qualified applicants and a high attrition rate of existing officers.
