Badly Burned Boy Makes Heroic Recovery

Posted: 4:59 pm PST March 7, 2008Updated: 6:45 pm PST March 7, 2008

The little boy who was burned over most of his body in a fatal fire in his family’s Richmond home this past December is making a remarkable recovery from his injuries, but still faces a long road ahead according to his family and doctors who spoke at a press conference on Friday.

It's a situation that can't help but generate mixed feelings. It just seems so unfair for a young child and his family to go through so much. But thanks to young Julian’s perseverance, one feeling you do get from them is hope.

Every day and every moment is a struggle for 5-year old Julian Zaragoza. The young boy has undergone numerous surgeries and countless hours of rehabilitation at San Jose's Valley Medical Center.

Julian was burned over 70-percent of his body after a Christmas tree fire in his North Richmond home last December 21st. His twin brother and best friend Francisco was killed in the fire.

The two had just received Christmas presents at a toy giveaway the day before.

But Julian keeps the family feeling optimistic through his progress and attitude.

"His ability to cope with this has really been tremendous," said burn unit Dr. Yvonne Karanas.

Through a translator, Julian's mother Guilllermina Zaragoza explained that she worries just as much about the scars no one else can see: "Julian is doing better physically, but emotionally he still having a hard time, especially since he lost his brother Francisco."

But Julian just won't let the family get too down. Recently he began walking on his own. On Friday, the family held a news conference to thank people for donations.

Julian surprised everybody by insisting he be allowed outside too. And his father got a much needed laugh when Julian said he wanted to eat something besides hospital food.

"I'm happy for Julian. He can walk and he's laughing, you know? I asked him [about food and he said] 'Daddy, I want a full burrito or a torta.' I like that," said Donaldo Rodriguez.

But there are many short-term and lifelong obstacles left for Julian and his family. Donors who wish to contribute to a fund set up for Julian and his family can do so by clicking here.
