SAN FRANCISCO -- A Canadian food company has issued a recall of approximately 3,780 pounds of frozen chicken entrees that may be contaminated with a bacteria and were shipped to Bay Area retail outlets, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Safety Inspection Service. While not specifically identifying the retail outlets, the Whole Foods website listed it among the items that have been recalled from its Northern California stores. Inovata Foods of Edmonton, Alberta, was voluntarily recalling the 12-ounce packages of "Discover Cuisine Red Curry Chicken & Jasmine Rice," which were produced on Oct. 18, 2007, and subsequently exported to the U.S. and sent to distributors and retail establishments nationwide. Each package of the chicken says "Est. 302" inside the Canadian Food Inspection Agency mark of inspection. The packages are also each stamped with a "best by" date of Dec. 18. The chicken is believed to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which causes fever, muscle aches and occasionally nausea and diarrhea, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An infection reportedly can spread to the nervous system. There have been no reports of illnesses associated with the consumption of this product, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Safety Inspection Service.
