ANTIOCH, Calif. -- A Pittsburg officer -- part of a narcotics task force attempting to serve a search warrant at an Antioch apartment complex early Tuesday -- opened fire and fatally wounded a man, authorities said. Officers from the Central Contra Costa County Narcotics Task Enforcement Team went to a home in the 1000 block of H Street at about 7 a.m. to serve a warrant for a marijuana-related charge, Department of Justice spokesman Gareth Lacy said. When the agents entered the residence, a confrontation allegedly broke out between the officers and the suspect. A struggle ensued between a suspect and the agents over an agent's gun before the Pittsburg police detective shot at the suspect, Lacy said. Officials rendered first aid but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of his family. The detective who fired his weapon has been with the Pittsburg Police Department for about five-and-a-half years, according to Lacy.Six members of the task force, including detectives from the Walnut Creek, San Ramon and Pittsburg police departments, were at the residence. Antioch police were also present to assist in serving the warrant.James Stringer, who lives near the home where the shooting occurred, said he has just gotten home from work and gone to bed when the shooting took place."My sister woke me up and said the cops were outside at Tim's door," he said. "She said she heard the cops say 'Shots fired!' and then they knocked down his door."The man who answered the door -- identified by neighbors as "Tim" -- died at the scene. State and local investigators were at the apartment trying to unravel the details of the shooting.Stringer said it was a quiet neighborhood and he was shocked by the shooting."It makes me wonder, I have a 2-year-old son," he said. "I'm nervous…I thought this was a good neighborhood."The Central Contra Costa County Narcotics Task Enforcement Team is multi-agency task force of state and local law enforcement agents who are trained by the Department of Justice.
