Death, Taxes, Golden Gate Bridge Toll Increases

Posted: 7:17 am PDT March 14, 2008Updated: 7:35 pm PDT March 14, 2008

Like death and taxes, Marin rush-hour commuters can rest assured they will be paying more for their journey across the famed Golden Gate Bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge District's board voted 10-8 Friday morning to impose higher tolls on the bridge during periods of high traffic congestion. However, the board made some changes to how the money would be spent from a proposal that had been unanimously passed by an advisory committee just 24 hours earlier.

Approving the resolution qualified the Bay Area for $158.7 million in federal grant funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation under an Urban Partnership Agreement.

The congestion pricing proposal has to be approved by March 31 before the money can be spent. The actual collection of the congestion toll must begin no later than Sept. 30, 2009.

Before Friday's vote, board members debated over whether or not some of the money would help pay for the $1.1 billion reconstruction of the Doyle Drive approach to the bridge.

The resolution approving congestion pricing does not specify a congestion toll amount. Specifics would be developed in the next 30-45 days and a public hearing would then be held in June.
