Bizarre Vanjacking At San Francisco International

Posted: 7:39 am PDT March 17, 2008Updated: 7:47 am PDT March 17, 2008

A man in a wheelchair outside of San Francisco International Airport's Terminal 1 Monday morning jumped into an idling hotel courtesy van as the driver was removing luggage and took the shocked passengers on a short joyride before fleeing the scene, according to airport officials.

Duty Manager John Ginty said the bizarre incident began after a hotel van carrying about 14 people stopped at the terminal at about 5:30 a.m.

The van's driver exited the vehicle to unload bags for nine crewmembers exiting the van.

With the driver's seat empty, a man in a wheelchair rode across a crosswalk, got out of the chair and into the driver's seat, Ginty said.

The suspect drove the van around the upper terminal twice with four remaining passengers on board, then abandoned the vehicle, according to Ginty.

Airport officials have not apprehended the suspect. No injuries were reported.
