FBI Joins Probe Of Former Nightclub Owner's Slaying

POSTED: 10:49 am PDT March 19, 2008

The FBI has joined a task force assembled to investigate last week's murder of Mark Achilli, a former nightclub owner who was found gunned down on the driveway of a Los Gatos condominium complex.

The Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Department unveiled the make-up of the task force on Wednesday, but did not give a reason why a federal agency was now involved in investigating the city's first homicide since 2003.

Other members of the task force were the Santa Clara Police Department, San Jose Police Department and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office.

The shooting was reported at about 11:40 a.m. at 18400 Overlook Road. Arriving officers found Achilli suffering multiple gunshot wounds in the driveway of a complex that has multiple condominium units, police Sgt. Randy Rimple said.

Achilli, a resident of the Rancho De Los Gatos complex on Overlook Road, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police located shell casings on the ground that indicated a semi-automatic weapon was used in the shooting.

Witnesses reported seeing the suspect flee the area on foot, Rimple said.

The suspect was described as a slender white or Hispanic man standing about 5 feet 8 inches with black hair. He was last seen wearing a black hat, black clothing and carrying a black bag with a shoulder strap.

A resident of the area told investigators that a person matching the description was at the nearby intersection of Hernandez and Chestnut avenues at about 8 a.m., about three and a half hours prior to the shooting, Rimple said.

The suspect remained at large. Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to contact Los Gatos police at (408) 354-8600.
