SANTA CLARA -- A 24-year-old man was fatally shot by Santa Clara County police Saturday morning after he stabbed a friend and a police dog, and then confronted officers while holding the knife. Police communications received calls reporting a disturbance at 2548 Crystal Drive around 3:45 a.m. Callers reported seeing four men arguing and fighting in the front yard, according to police. When authorities arrived at the home they found the suspect barricaded in a bedroom at the home next door, 2554 Crystal Drive, police reported. Officers tried to negotiate with him, and when that didn't work they sent in a police dog. The suspect stabbed the dog, then brandished the knife at two police officers, who shot the suspect. Emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the home. Preliminary investigation shows that the suspect was initially inside the home at 2548 Crystal Drive when "he went berserk" and jumped through a window, according to police. He then smashed through a window at the neighboring home, causing the residents to flee. A friend entered the home at 2554 Crystal Drive and attempted to calm the suspect, but the suspect stabbed his friend. The friend was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Both officers involved in the shooting have been placed on standard administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
