OAKLAND, Calif. -- Oakland roofer Earl Stefanson was convicted Monday of murdering 36-year-old Leslie Lamb in 2006 and brutally assaulting two other ex-girlfriends. An Alameda County Superior Court jury deliberated for six days before delivering their verdict today. It took a clerk for Judge Leo Dorado 17 minutes to read all the felony charges of which Stefanson was convicted. They are one count of first-degree murder, one count of torture, four counts of assault, two counts of inflicting corporal injuries on a cohabitant, two counts of false imprisonment and count of being an ex-felon in possession of a gun. Stefanson also was convicted of five misdemeanors, including battery, false imprisonment and domestic battery. He was acquitted of several other charges, including assault, false imprisonment and inflicting corporal injuries on a cohabitant. Stefanson, who also has a 1995 conviction for running a methamphetamine laboratory in Butte County, is likely to face life in prison when Dorado sentences him in the near future. In addition to being convicted of murdering Lamb on Aug. 26, 2006, Stefanson was convicted of assaulting Zeba Wahed and Kristen Nielson on various dates between 2004 and 2006. Stefanson dated all three women at one point or another. In his closing argument last month, prosecutor Casey Bates described them as "lost souls" who succumbed to drugs and were taken advantage of by Stefanson, whom he described as "a predator." But defense attorney Ted Berry said that all three women consented to be abused and "there are people in this world who will pay money to be beaten."
