Boaters Saved From Flaming Yacht

Posted: 5:35 pm PDT April 12, 2008Updated: 7:03 am PDT April 14, 2008

Three people were rescued Saturday from the frigid waters of San Francisco Bay after their yacht's engine caught fire, engulfing the ship in flames and sending the passengers overboard.

The San Francisco Fire Department sent 11 units to the incident, including two jetskis and one fireboat which doused the flames with its water canon before the vessel's remains sank into the waters between Yerba Buena Island and the Berkeley Marina.

Traffic on Interstate 880 slowed to a crawl as motorists' eyes were drawn to the tall plume of smoke and numerous vessels rushing to the scene.

The Coast Guard also sent two cutter ships to assist in the emergency response.

No injuries were reported.
