PG&E Guide To Earthquake Preparedness
Posted: 8:00 pm PDT April 18, 2008
UNDATED -- On the 102nd anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, Bay Area residents are reminded to consider safety plans in the event gas or electric service is shut down following a major earthquake, according to the Pacific Gas and Electric Co. PG&E officials advise residents to know how to safely turn off electricity, water and gas and have an emergency plan ready before an earthquake strikes. During a quake, stoves and other appliances should be turned off if it is safely possible, according to PG&E. Should residents smell or hear a natural gas leak in the home following a quake, they are advised to open windows and doors, leave the residence, and call 911, PG&E and the fire department. Electrical switches, appliances and telephones should not be used during a gas leak, as sparks can ignite the gas, according to PG&E.
