PG&E Guide To Earthquake Preparedness

Posted: 8:00 pm PDT April 18, 2008

On the 102nd anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, Bay Area residents are reminded to consider safety plans in the event gas or electric service is shut down following a major earthquake, according to the Pacific Gas and Electric Co.

PG&E officials advise residents to know how to safely turn off electricity, water and gas and have an emergency plan ready before an earthquake strikes.

During a quake, stoves and other appliances should be turned off if it is safely possible, according to PG&E.

Should residents smell or hear a natural gas leak in the home following a quake, they are advised to open windows and doors, leave the residence, and call 911, PG&E and the fire department.

Electrical switches, appliances and telephones should not be used during a gas leak, as sparks can ignite the gas, according to PG&E.
