Sixty-Second Pursuit Ends In Golden Gate Park Trees

Posted: 7:18 am PDT April 21, 2008Updated: 8:36 am PDT April 21, 2008

A high-speed police pursuit ended moments after it began early Monday when a truck slammed into a grove of trees in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, leaving two suspects with life-threatening injuries.

Sgt. Steve Mannina said police were first called at about 3 a.m. to the area of Seventh Avenue and Hugo Street, Mannina said. A witness reported hearing glass breaking and seeing someone trying to break into a car.

The witness described the vehicle as a gray Toyota pickup truck, Mannina said.

Arriving officers found that the suspects in the break-in had already left the area and broadcast the vehicle description.

SF Police Capt. David Lazar told KTVU that when a patrol car attempted to pull the truck over, it took off at a high rate of speed and raced into Golden Gate Park.

"Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over and it failed to comply," Lazar said. "Officers then became involved in a pursuit.

The truck -- with three people onboard -- wheeled into Golden Gate Park but did not get far as it careened out of control on Martin Luther King Drive and crashed into a grove of trees. All three suspects had to be extricated from the crumpled cab of the truck.

Two of the suspects suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash, police said, a third was also being treated at a nearby hospital for lesser injuries.

MLK Drive was closed for several hours as police investigated the crash. All three suspects were in police custody.
