Sixty-Second Pursuit Ends In Golden Gate Park Trees

SAN FRANCISCO -- A high-speed police pursuit ended moments after it began early Monday when a truck slammed into a grove of trees in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, leaving two suspects with life-threatening injuries. Sgt. Steve Mannina said police were first called at about 3 a.m. to the area of Seventh Avenue and Hugo Street, Mannina said. A witness reported hearing glass breaking and seeing someone trying to break into a car. The witness described the vehicle as a gray Toyota pickup truck, Mannina said. Arriving officers found that the suspects in the break-in had already left the area and broadcast the vehicle description.SF Police Capt. David Lazar told KTVU that when a patrol car attempted to pull the truck over, it took off at a high rate of speed and raced into Golden Gate Park."Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over and it failed to comply," Lazar said. "Officers then became involved in a pursuit.The truck -- with three people onboard -- wheeled into Golden Gate Park but did not get far as it careened out of control on Martin Luther King Drive and crashed into a grove of trees. All three suspects had to be extricated from the crumpled cab of the truck.Two of the suspects suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash, police said, a third was also being treated at a nearby hospital for lesser injuries.MLK Drive was closed for several hours as police investigated the crash. All three suspects were in police custody.
