Thousands Of Pot Smokers Celebrate 4/20

Posted: 8:41 am PDT April 21, 2008Updated: 10:01 am PDT April 21, 2008

A massive cloud of smoke hovered above a University of California, Santa Cruz meadow Sunday afternoon as numerous small fires were sparked—to light pipes, blunts, joints, and bongs.

Thousands of pot smokers peacefully converged on the campus for the annual 4/20 marijuana smoke-out, named after the date of the holiday, April 20th. The event forced the closure of both entrances to the campus but resulted in no arrests.

“I heard there’s a lot of people,” said UCSC student John Seizmore. “There’s marijuana. I like people. I like marijuana. It’s like Disneyland, dig.”

Smokers were seen settle in the grass with pretzels, chips and cookies, ready to chase away the “munchies,” which is known to accompany marijuana use.

The event was widely publicized, including in “Rolling Stone.”

The University had tried to limit the number of people participating in the massive event, but in the hours before 4:20 p.m., thousands had already gathered in Porter Meadow—the grassy expanse bordering Porter College, which is known as the artistic and psychotropic hub of the campus.

Cars were again allowed through both entrances of campus Monday morning following their closure this weekend.

Four people were cited during the event.
