RICHMOND -- A Richmond man who was fatally shot in San Pablo's Davis Park Friday night appears to have been involved in the ongoing disputes between Richmond and North Richmond criminal street factions, San Pablo Cmdr. Mark Foisie said Monday. Two San Pablo police officers who were on patrol about two blocks from the park, located at 1665 Folsom Ave., heard gunshots shortly before 8 p.m. Friday and were on the scene within minutes, Foisie said. The two officers found the victim, a 23-year-old Richmond resident, near the park's picnic benches suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he died. There were several witnesses to the shooting, but they have so far been uncooperative, Foisie said. Davis Park extends about 10 city blocks and is surrounded by a residential neighborhood. The 12-acre plot has baseball and soccer fields, a playground, a senior center and walking trails. Wildcat Creek also run through it. The park isn't known as a particularly dangerous area. "It's no worse than anywhere else," Foisie said. The man is the city's fifth homicide victim this year, Foisie said. Police were not releasing the victim's name today, but were asking that anyone with information on the incident call the San Pablo Police Department at (510) 215-3130.
