According to TerraChoice Environmental Marketing Incthe "Six Sins of Greenwashing" are as follows:
- 1.Sin of the Hidden Trade-Off -- A product is green based on a single environmental attribute,or narrow set of attribute without attention to other important environmental issues.
- 2. Sin of No Proof -- An environmental claim that cannot be substantiated easily by supporting information or by a reliable third-party certification.
- 3. Sin of Vagueness -- The claim is so poorly defined or broad that its real meaning is likely to be misunderstood by the intended consumer.
- 4. Sin of Irrelevance -- The claim is truthful but unimportant and unhelpful for consumers seeking environmental preferable products.
- 5. Sin of Lesser of Two Evils -- When environmental qualifiers such as "organic" or "green" are placed on products in which the entire product category is of questionable environmental value.
- 6. Sin of Fibbing -- Making environmental claims that are simply false.
