One Killed; Two Injured In 680 Wrong-Way Crash

Posted: 10:33 am PDT April 26, 2008

One person died, two were injured and a third was booked into jail after a wrong-way driver triggered a multiple-vehicle crash early Saturday morning on Highway 680 in Fremont, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP Officer A. Paulson said that a vehicle driving northbound in the No. 1 lane of southbound Interstate Highway 680 crashed into at least one vehicle traveling the correct way on southbound Highway 680 just north of Washington Boulevard.

A female victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Paulson. Another victim suffered major injuries and a third had minor injuries.

After the crash, the suspect vehicle continued traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 680 until Mission Boulevard, where CHP officers implemented a spike strip in the road to stop the vehicle, according to Paulson.

The driver of that vehicle was uninjured and subsequently arrested, Paulson said.
