OAKLAND, Calif. -- The 21-year-old man who was fatally shot by Oakland police over the weekend after he allegedly robbed an Alameda car rental business was a suspect in two Fairfield crimes and a person of interest in two San Rafael robberies, officials confirmed Tuesday. The man who was shot, Andrew Marcus Gonzalez, was identified by Fairfield police as the suspect in an attempted robbery of the Comfort Inn at 5:30 a.m. April 21 and the robbery 15 minutes later of the Homewood Suites. Fairfield police Lt. Al Bagos said last week Gonzalez had a history of drug use, was armed and dangerous and told his family he would not be taken alive. His last known address was Oakland, Bagos said. Lt. Mike Hill and Bagos confirmed this morning the man shot by Oakland police was the suspect in the Fairfield crimes. San Rafael police said he was a person of interest in the robbery of a Motel 6 on April 18 and the April 20 robbery of City Hall Records music company. The suspect in the City Hall Records robbery and in both Fairfield crimes was described as a short man in his teens or early 20s who had severe facial acne. Oakland police identified Gonzalez, of Concord, as the suspect who robbed an Alameda car rental business, kidnapped an Oakland resident and drove into police vehicles Saturday. They said he had a warrant out for his arrest and was wanted in connection with robberies and carjackings in several Bay Area cities. Oakland police said Gonzalez entered an Enterprise Rent-A-Car office in the 2300 block of Blanding Avenue at about 11:15 a.m. Saturday. Alameda police Lt. Mark Landes said he simulated having a gun and robbed the clerk of cash, a wallet, car keys and a cell phone before driving away in a stolen rental car. He drove into Oakland where he was involved in a traffic collision in the area of 29th Avenue near the onramp to Interstate Highway 880, Landes said. After a failed attempt to steal another vehicle, Gonzalez forced his way into a home in the 2879 East Seventh St., according to police spokesman Roland Holmgren. He allegedly assaulted a resident, forced him into a vehicle and attempted to have the resident drive him away, Holmgren said. The vehicle entered the street and came to a stop. Gonzalez and the victim fought and both fell out of the passenger door before the resident managed to escape, according to Holmgren. Officers who had converged in the area had been advised that Gonzalez had been armed in previous robberies and may have been holding a hostage, Holmgren said. Gonzalez allegedly entered the vehicle's driver seat and drove into officers' vehicles when he was fatally shot, Holmgren said. The shooting is under investigation by the Oakland Police Department and the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.
