Three-Alarm SF Fire Reduces Dreams To Debris

Posted: 8:27 am PDT April 28, 2008Updated: 11:40 am PDT April 28, 2008

Residents picked through piles of debris littering San Francisco's Blanken Avenue Monday, the remains of personal belongings and charred pieces of several businesses heavily damaged by a three-alarm fire.

Fire investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire that swept through four buildings on a windy Sunday night in San Francisco's Visitacion Valley neighborhood.

The fire, which began at about 7:30 p.m. in a two-story, commercial and residential building at 15-19 Blanken Ave., quickly spread to three other buildings before it was brought under control at about 8:15 p.m., San Francisco fire Lt. Mindy Talmadge said today.

The American Red Cross has provided temporary shelter to five adults displaced by the fire, according to Talmadge.

Three other combined commercial-residential buildings, at 2155 Bayshore Blvd., 25 Blanken Ave. and 33 Blanken Ave., suffered fire damage, Talmadge said.

Damage to all four buildings and their contents have been estimated at almost $700,000.

Talmadge said the blustery conditions likely contributed to the spread of the fire.

"The wind really whipped it up a bit," Talmadge said, adding that firefighters aggressively attacked the flames and brought it under control quickly.

No residents or firefighters were injured, though one woman was taken to the hospital for heart palpitations.

Talmadge said investigators may know more about how the fire started in the coming days.
