SAN RAFAEL -- Armed with picks, shovels and buckets, San Rafael police Wednesday meticulously searched a steep hillside near a residential area after a human skull was discovered by as homeowner clearing vegetation.A team of investigators swarmed the hillside early Wednesday and removed dirt from a 10-to-12 foot section. They then were sifting the removed dirt through screens in an attempt to find more bone fragments. The skull was found beneath a blackberry bush on Monday near the end of Lynn Court in the Bret Harte neighborhood. The skull was turned over to the Marin County coroner's office for testing. On Tuesday, the coroner's office reportedly determined the skull did not belong to a historical Native American. Forensic anthropologists will conduct further extensive tests in order to determine the gender, race and age of the deceased, police said. The tests may take up to a month to complete.
