94-Year-Old Arrested For Murder; Police Standoff Ends

UPDATED: 1:22 pm PDT May 2, 2008

A 94-year-old man was in custody Friday after he allegedly shot and killed his landlord and then staged an armed three-hour standoff with Oakland police.

Authorities said officers responded to reports of a shooting at 7:25 p.m. Thursday in the area of East 12th and High streets and found the victim collapsed in a Smart & Final store parking lot suffering a single gunshot wound to the chest, according to police.

The suspect reportedly shot his landlord during an argument before the victim staggered across the street to the parking lot and managed to avoid being struck by three additional bullets fired by the suspect, police said.

Robert Villegas, a neighbor and friend of the suspect, said that he heard the sounds of gunfire when interviewed Friday: "At the time of the incident, I was letting my dog out the back door, and I heard the something like a metal pipe hitting something and then somone moaning in pain. A couple of seconds later, I heard about five shots."

The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead at 10:17 p.m., according to police.

After the shooting, the suspect retreated inside his house and refused to come out, police said. Officers spent three and a half hours trying to convince the man to leave his house.

Around 11 p.m. officers distracted the man through a window while other officers entered the house and used a Taser to stun him, police said.

The suspect was then arrested and taken to the hospital, according to police.

The suspect has reportedly lived at the house for at least 35 years. Neighbors said that he feared being evicted and had a long-running dispute with his landlord that may have been the point of contention for their arguement Thursday evening.

People who knew him said that the suspect was an easy-going man, but noted that he carried a .22 caliber pistol for protection while walking in the neighborhood for excercise. At 94 years old, the man is believed to be the oldest homicide suspect ever taken into custody in Alameda County.
