Stray Bullet Wounds Oakland Woman

Posted: 8:12 am PDT May 8, 2008Updated: 5:34 pm PDT May 8, 2008

For the third time this year, a stray bullet has ripped into an Oakland building and wounded an unsuspecting victim. Fortunately, the victim of the early Thursday morning shooting only suffered a minor injury and was expected to survive.

Authorities said a woman was sitting in the living room of her apartment at 7985 MacArthur Blvd. when a bullet came crashing through the wall around 12:30 a.m. The woman, whose identity has not been released, suffered a non-life threatening wound and was being treated at a local hospital.

There had been no arrests or information released on a possible suspect.

The latest shooting was sure to raise anxiety among residents in the East Bay city that suffered its 47th homicide of the year in an unrelated shooting early Thursday. Officers responding to a 911 call at about 2:05 a.m. in the 5600 block of East 16th Street located a male victim suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.

While the escalating violence on the street has raised anxieties, it is the tragic toll being taken by stray bullets that has angered local residents.

On April 4, a stray bullet killed a 21-year-old mother who was struck while sleeping in her bed. The shooting took place just four blocks from the Thursday morning incident.

Shanice Davis had just moved back home with her mother less than two months ago with high hopes for starting a nursing and modeling career. Her sudden death left her one-year-old daughter without a mother and outraged local residents and city officials.

"In some kind of way we've lost our way, where we're killing and shooting each other, this is incredible," Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums said of the Davis shooting. "This is not about a political speech or a political statement. When we can live in a community when someone sleeping in their bed cannot feel safety, something is tragically wrong."

On January 10, Oakland 10-year-old Christopher Rodriguez was hit by a stray bullet fired during a robbery as he practiced piano at the Piedmont Piano Company.

The bullet ripped into Rodriguez's spinal cord, leaving him paralyzed and in a wheel chair.
