Oakland's 'Chicken Hawk' Bandit Strikes Again

Posted: 9:12 am PDT May 8, 2008Updated: 10:51 am PDT May 8, 2008

A brazen serial bandit -- nicknamed "Chicken Hawk" by Oakland police -- has struck again, but authorities were hoping Thursday that images captured by a surveillance camera would lead to his arrest.

Oakland police spokesman Ronald Holmgren said the armed gunman added The Shell Gas Station on the 3600 block of Park Blvd to his growing list of fast food restaurants and convenience stores robbed since his spree began in January.

"As early as late January we started experiencing a whole rash of commercial-type robberies," Holmgren told KTVU. "He's done upward to 20 robberies within the city of Oakland."

But this time his image was clearly captured by the camera's watchful eye.

"He's pretty nonchalant about how he handles his business," the police spokesman said. "He doesn't care whether it's night or day. He will just casually walk in there, produce his weapon and demand money. My fear is with his continued success, there is always the possibility of increasing violence."

"His courage is building up. If someone should not meet his needs to his liking, the possibility for violence is there."

Police dubbed the gunman the "chicken hawk" robber because he targets Kentucky Fried Chicken and Church's Fried Chicken outlets among other establishments.

"He had a liking or took a certain attraction to robbing Church's Chicken -- there are plenty of fast food restaurants -- chicken establishments -- within the city of Oakland he was targeting," Holmgren said.

The bandit is described as African American, between 5-feet-9-inches and 6-feet-1-inch tall, between 150 and 180 pounds, and wearing a black cap, yellow raincoat with hood and white latex gloves.

An award of $2,500 has been allotted through Oakland Crime Stoppers for information leading to the identification of this suspect.

Anyone with information is urged to call Oakland Crime Stoppers at (510) 777-8572 (voicemail) or (510) 777-3211 (live).
