GUALALA, Calif. -- Another abalone diver is dead after suffering a medical emergency while pursuing the mollusk off the North Coast of California. The Sonoma County Sheriff's Department responded to a call for help Thursday after friends of the unidentified man observed his medical distress near the Sea Ranch. The man was dead by the time firefighters arrived. Officials believe the cause of death was a heart attack or some other medical emergency. Earlier this week, a 39-year-old man from San Leandro drowned while abalone hunting just north of Mendocino. Six abalone hunters died last season.
