Man Arrested In Daly City Fatal Hit And Run

POSTED: 3:16 pm PDT May 13, 2008

Police arrested a 28-year-old man Tuesday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident May 6 that took the life of a Daly City man.

Russell Real, of Daly City, was arrested this morning for vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and felony hit-and-run, according to police. Detective Greg Oglesby observed Real walking on Junipero Serra Boulevard this morning and arrested him without incident at 11:30 a.m. Real told authorities that he was on his way to his attorney's office to surrender when he was arrested.

Authorities received reports of a vehicle collision at 9:34 p.m. from a witness, Capt. Michael Edwards said. When officers arrived to the intersection of Bellevue Avenue and Oliver Street they found James Allen Martin, 57, inside his small silver Dodge pickup.

Martin was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, San Mateo County coroner Robert Foucrault said.

Real, who was driving a white older model Chevrolet Bronco, fled the scene of the crash, Edwards said. The Bronco was found 20 minutes later at a residence a few blocks from the crash.

Police interviewed three people at the home, which led to the issuance of a $250,000 warrant for Real. He fled to Silver Springs, Nev., immediately after the crash and police were able to contact him there by phone, Edwards said. He told authorities that he would turn himself in when he got his affairs in order.

Preliminary investigations show that Real was driving the Bronco at a high rate of speed and did not stop at the four-way intersection, Edwards said. The larger car traveled through the intersection and crushed Martin's pickup truck, causing fatal injuries, according to police.
