SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco School district has suspended indefinitely a first grader found with a gun at Cleveland Elementary School last Friday. He could be expelled after a review process.School officials said that the first grader told another student about the gun. A teacher later heard other students talking about a gun and the principal was notified. The boy apparently said he thought it was a toy. The principal and a social worker found the gun in the boy's backpack. The school notified police and the child's parents as well as child protective services. Police returned the boy to his parent's custody that same day.So far, no one has been arrested and no charges have been filed.San Francisco school board member Jill Wynns said incidents like this rarely happen. "In the 16 years I've been on the school board, this is only the second time that we've ever had a gun associated with an elementary school kid...in both cases , they didn't actually know what they had." said Wynns. Some parents said they would like schools to be required to hold meetings with parents to educate them on the dangers of guns and other weapons.Patricia Alvizo said: "For a child, anything is a toy, a rocket is a toy, a stick is a toy, a gun is a toy. You need to be aware of your child and what they're doing."School Superintendent Carlos Garcia said that the board tries to create an environment that is safe, but you can't plan for every possible scenario.A school district spokeswoman said the youngster will likely be placed in a different school after he serves his suspension because of concerns that he would be stigmatized if he remains at Cleveland Elementary.
