TIBURON, Calif. -- Samples taken from water Wednesday near the site of a Monday night wastewater spill near Tiburon indicated that quality levels were within state recreational water standards, according to Marin County Environmental Health Services. Approximately 85,000 gallons of treated wastewater from a treatment plant spilled into the Racoon Straits waterway, according to the Marin County officials. The Tiburon Sanitary District No. 5 reported the discharge of the wastewater, which occurred just before midnight Monday. The water had already been chlorinated and dechlorinated and there were no solids present, county officials reported. Water samples were taken from the Corinthean Yacht Club, from east of the Corinthean Yacht Club and from the San Francisco Yacht Club. All three sites had total coliform bacteria, fecal coliform bacteria and enterococcus bacteria levels that fells within the compliance limits set by state recreational water contact standards. Warning signs that were posted in the area will remain until a second consecutive day of testing reveals healthy levels, according to Environmental Health Services.
