BERKELEY, Calif. -- A 17-year-old Berkeley boy is being treated for a gunshot wound to his abdomen in an incident at the intersection of Dwight Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Way shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday, according to Berkeley police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss. The suspect in the shooting is a boy described as being between the ages of 15 and 17 who fled the area and is still at large, Kusmiss said. She said that at 3:12 p.m., one caller told police that there was a man with a gun at Dwight Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Way and another caller said there was a male teenager firing shots into the ground. Kusmiss said officers who went to the intersection didn't find any gun casings or any evidence of a crime. But she said moments later a female driver flagged down a police officer several blocks away at Channing Way and Shattuck Avenue and said the 17-year-old boy was in his passenger seat and saw suffering from a gunshot wound. Kusmiss said the driver was a Berkeley Technical High School teacher and the boy had recognized her and flagged her down and asked to be driven to the hospital. The teacher had heard shots fired but didn't see the shooting incident, Kusmiss said. The high school is located near the site of the shooting incident. Officers transported the 17-year-old to Highland Hospital, where he's being treated for an abdomen wound that doesn't appear to be life-threatening, she said. Kusmiss said police talked to a large number of witnesses in the area of DwightAvenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Way who said they didn't see the shooting but they saw the young suspect fleeing the area by jumping over fences. She said the suspect was last seen in the 1800 block of Dwight Avenue, which is between Grant Street and McKinley Avenue. Kusmiss said police initially thought there were two shooting incidents but it turned out it was a single incident.
