A weekend visit to a popular swimming lagoon near Hayward has claimed the life of a Berkeley boy.

Authorities say six-year-old Jamon Lewis drowned Sunday during a visit to Don Castro Regional Recreation Area with his family.

The boy was pulled from the bottom of the lagoon Sunday afternoon and taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.

An Alameda County coroner's official says Jamon died at the hospital. A memorial fund has been set up in Jamon Lewis' name. More information can be found here.
