NYC Cranes Official Faces Bribery Charges

Two Crane Collapses Since March

Fallout from a series of New York City accidents in which construction cranes collapsed and killed people on busy streets continued Friday when police arrested the city’s assistant chief inspector with the city's cranes and derricks division on charges of receiving bribes.

James Delayo is charged with collecting thousands of dollars in bribes from a crane company. The city's Department of Investigation also accuses him of tampering with licensing exams by providing the answers for crane operator exams to a crane company.

However, the city said Delayo's alleged conduct had nothing to do with two crane collapses that have killed nine people since March.

On May 30, the cab of the 200-foot-high crane popped off its mast and plummeted onto a Manhattan street, pulverizing a penthouse and shearing balconies off an apartment building across from the site.

The crane’s operator, Donald Leo, died in the accident.

The city suspended all crane construction and the Manhattan District Attorney immediately opened a probe after the collapse. City officials allowed most crane operations at construction sites around the city to resume June 2.

On March 15, a construction crane collapsed and killed seven people in Manhattan, after breaking away from an apartment tower under construction and toppling onto buildings and the street below.

A subsequent investigation ended with a city inspector being arrested for faking a clean bill of health for the crane.

Some of the city's biggest names in construction met for hours Saturday to discuss safety.
