Bay Area Woman Contracts Salmonella Related To Nationwide Outbreak

Posted: 10:45 pm PDT June 6, 2008

Health officials say a Contra Costa County woman is the latest person to become ill from eating raw tomatoes tainted with the Salmonella bacteria. It was the first reported case involving a California resident.

A nationwide outbreak has sickened 57 people in New Mexico, Texas, and other states.

Contra Costa County health officials say they are trying to determine where the woman ate the tainted tomatoes. Officials say she recently traveled to a state where other cases occurred.

Officials say there is no indication her illness was caused by tomatoes grown in California.

Salmonella can cause vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and fever. It can be especially dangerous for the very young, the elderly, and people with impaired immune systems.

The Food and Drug Administration is advising people to limit their tomato consumption to cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, homegrown tomatoes, and tomatoes sold with the vine still attached.
