SAN FRANCISCO -- Members of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition rallied in front of city hall Monday demanding that city officials speed up work on a citywide bicycle plan that they say has languished at City Hall. A comprehensive bike plan was passed in 2005 and approved by Mayor Gavin Newsom, only to be stalled by a court injunction that called for a broad environmental review of the program.San Francisco Bicycle Coalition Executive Director Leah Shahum says the city must move forward with plans for more bicycle lanes, bike racks and safety signs throughout the city. "We're a growing community of people; we're not a special interest. We're not someone the city can brush off anymore. There are 125,000 of us out there regularly bicycling to work, to school and on our errands."The Board of Supervisors land use committee held a hearing on the plan Monday afternoon. They expect a new environmental review on the proposal to be completed by this fall, with a final review completed next year, a timetable bicycle activists say is unacceptable.
