Oakland Violence Escalates; 75 Homicides This Year

Posted: 10:47 pm PDT July 21, 2008Updated: 7:50 pm PDT July 22, 2008

Violence escalated on Oakland’s deadly streets overnight with five separate shootings, claiming one life and increasing the city’s mounting homicide total to 75 so far this year.

The most recent shooting occurred around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday morning, claiming the life of a 33-year-old Oakland man and raising the city's homicide tally to 74 for the year, according to police spokesman Roland Holmgren.

Officers located the victim in a vehicle in the 8700 block of Bancroft Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene and his identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.

Police found evidence indicating the shooting took place in the 2100 block of 88th Avenue.

The string of shootings began around 9:20 p.m. Monday when two men were injured in the 900 block of Filbert Street, Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said.

Both men are reportedly in stable condition.

Another shooting, at about 10:45 p.m., brought officers to the 2600 block of 82nd Avenue and left a male victim with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, according to Thomason.

About 15 minutes later, a man was shot and injured in the 2700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Thomason said.

The suspects were described as four male juveniles.

Then, at about 1:15 a.m., a man was shot in the leg in the 1200 block of 99th Avenue, according to Thomason. Police initially reported the incident as a homicide, however the victim underwent surgery and was reported to be in stable condition.

Thomason said there is no indication that any of the shootings are related.

Anyone with information regarding the crimes is asked to call Oakland police homicide detectives at (510) 238-3821.

The violent outbreak came as the Oakland City Council's prepares to take a six-week vacation -- a break being criticized by civic leaders.

"Murder does not take a vacation," says Reverend George Cummings. "There've been 73 homicides so far this year. Last year there were 67. The beat goes on and the city government is not moving quickly enough for us."

In May, the faith based Oakland Community Organizations pitched a plan to the city to cut down on the violence in three neighborhoods. It says city officials including Mayor Ron Dellums offered money, people, and other resources. However, the group says nothing has happened since then.

"Twenty murders have happened in Oakland since that action took place and it's not gonna abate simply because they're on vacation," says Michael Wharton of Oakland Community Organizations, which says it represents more than 40,000 Oakland families.

KTVU tried to talk to members of the city council to see if they would be willing to work during their vacation on measures to ease the violence.

Council president Ignacio de la Fuente said, "I applaud this group I think it's the right thing to do. I think the citizens should demand for us to do more, demand for us to respond to this increase in crime."
