SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. -- The Scotts Valley skatepark on King's Valley Drive will remain closed until at least Saturday while crews clean-up the work of graffiti vandals.Police closed the park Wednesday morning after swastikas and white power slogans were spray-painted on 21 ramps and walls inside the park. Sgt. Mike Dean came on the scene Wednesday morning after a person walking through the park alerted police. "I was actually sickened by it because I don't see things in the city of Scotts Valley like this," Sgt. Dean said. It's city policy to close the park for at least three days after any vandalism. Sgt. Dean added, "It is skatable, but the words and the German swastikas are very disturbing and for young kids skating here, they may have to ask their parents what it means."Karen Reid of Aptos brought her son to skate at the park today, but instead had to explain what the graffiti meant. "Way back when they tried to kill the Jews in World War Two, that was Hitler from Germany and that's what that is, that sign," she explained.Police say there have been no recent racial incidents in the city, although someone spray-painted a swastika on the floor of the gym at Scotts Valley High School in April of last year. No one was arrested in that incident.Whoever vandalized the skatepark could be charged with misdemeanor vandalism, but also might face a hate crimes enhancement or even felony vandalism charges if the cost of the cleanup proves to be high enough.
