HAYWARD, Calif. -- A Bay Area charity is trying to figure out its next move after a fire Thursday afternoon destroyed a Hayward warehouse full of goods intended for needy families.Hope For the Heart is a non-profit organization that functions as a food bank and donates toys throughout the Bay Area during the holidays, fire officials said. The blaze was reported around 3:15 p.m. at the organziations warehouse at Meekland Avenue near Poplar Avenue and was knocked down within 80 minutes, Alameda County fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said. Unfortunately, the flames spread to the nearby Seventh Day Adventist Spanish Church, scorching a fellowship hall and causing severe damage. Firefighters were still cleaning up at the warehouse on Meekland Avenue late into the evening, but there is nothing left to salvage for the charity. The Hope for the Heart building was a "total loss" and was completely destroyed, including 90-100 pallets of toys being restored for the holiday season, Knowles said.No was injured and the dollar loss has yet to be determined, but the social services loss is great. Six thousand families depend on hope for the heart."There were pallets and pallets of toys and Christmas items that we save all year to give at the end of November," says Hope for the Heart representative Victoria Popejoy. "There was food. There were children's items that we would send to centers or just send to different places to buld their programs."Knowles added that the organization offered resources to all nine Bay Area counties and firefighters with the Alameda County Fire Department had volunteered with them in the past. "This is a place that is very close to all of us," she explained. Knowles also said she spoke with someone from the organization who said, "God is good and everything will work out."On Thursday night, some church members were already pitching in to clean up the rubble. Hope for the Heart is also asking for help because there was no insurance on the warehouse. The agency says it will rebuild and is looking to the community to replenish the food and supplies they have lost."We are going to have to start over. [It] just kind of depends on the community,” explains Popejoy. ”We have been a real part of our community giving and we're just going to have to depend on our community."Hope for the heart says the fire will not stop its work and they will be open on monday to distribute food and supplies they had stored in another location.
