Armed Bandits Storm Another Oakland Restaurant

Posted: 9:52 pm PDT August 6, 2008Updated: 7:37 pm PDT August 7, 2008

For the second time in the space of 24 hours, armed intruders stormed an Oakland restaurant and demanded money from customers and employees Wednesday night, according to Oakland police officers investigating the incident.

It was the tenth takeover-style restaurant robbery committed in the East Bay in the last two weeks.

Robbery took place at about 8:45 p.m. when three masked men wearing hooded sweatshirts and ski masks entered the King of King Chinese restaurant on the 1100 block of East 12th Street. One was armed with a gun.

A customer present during the robbery told KTVU that there were eight other customers in the restaurant at the time in addition to the restaurant owner, his wife and several employees.

The customers were ordered to the ground by the masked man with the gun before the robbers took their cash and fled, according to the witness. That's when police were called to the scene.

Officers say they have detailed descriptions from the customers at the restaurant as well as surveillance video. Though the number of men matched the number the assailants who held up Skyline Pizza in Piedmont only 24 hours before this latest crime and their descriptions weere similar, police wouldn't say if there was a link between the incidents.

"As far as a connection, it's definitely too early in the investigation to tell," said Oakland Police Lt. Chris Mufarreh.

No one was injured in the robbery, though one customer told KTVU that the owner of the restaurant was hit in the side of the head by one of the assailants.

Police did say that a car was stopped for a traffic violation on the 2000 block of 13th Avenue within an hour of the incident and that three men have been detained and a weapon was recovered from the vehicle. Though they wouldn't confirm that there was a connection to the latest takeover robbery, victims at the restaurant were being shuttled to Oakland police headquarters for further investigation related to the two incidents.
