SAN FRANCISCO -- Animal control officers were called to a street corner near Golden Gate Park early Thursday after the remains of a wild coyote were discovered – the latest incident involving a coyote near or within the popular San Francisco tourist destination.Authorities were warning residents in the nearby city neighborhood to be on a lookout for coyotes after pupping season increased the park’s native population from five to around two dozen. The animal’s carcass was discovered during the morning commute at Fulton and Park Presidio and apparently had been struck by a vehicle. The animal’s death came a day after a resident in the nearby Sunset District reported seeing a coyote crossing the street in the area of Lincoln Way and Sunset Boulevard, according to Lt. Le-Ellis Brown. He said coyote sightings were being reported nearly every day in the city. "They're all around San Francisco, from Golden Gate Park to Bernal Heights to Diamond Heights," Brown said. Sightings have become a bit more scattered with the recent end of "pupping season," Brown said. Animal Care and Control officers take reports of sightings and use a map for coyote tracking, but don't respond unless the coyote is reported to be aggressive. Coyote attacks in the city are rare, as the animals are typically reclusive and not aggressive. Animal Care and Control officials advise residents who encounter a coyote to yell, wave their hands in the air or throw small rocks to frighten the animal but not injure it. Residents are advised not to feed coyotes or let pets interact with them.
