Tiger Attack Victim Sent To Jail

Posted: 10:35 pm PDT August 15, 2008Updated: 10:17 am PDT August 16, 2008

One of two brothers who survived a tiger attack at San Francisco Zoo has been sentenced to 16 months in state prison for violating probation in a felony reckless driving case.

In December, Paul Dhaliwal was sentenced to 30 days in Santa Clara County jail and three years of probation for leading police on a high-speed chase through San Jose last year.

But three days after sentencing he was cited for marijuana possession, and in March he was also arrested on suspicion of shoplifting.

A deputy district attorney says Dhaliwal pleaded guilty earlier this week to a series of probation violations, including possession of alcohol and marijuana.

Dhaliwal still faces felony shoplifting charges in Alameda County.

Dhaliwal's older brother, 27-year-old Kulbir Dhaliwal, is charged in that same September altercation with San Jose police. He's pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to go to trial on Monday to face misdemeanor charges of public drunkenness and resisting arrest.

This week's sentencing comes as the two Dhaliwal brothers prepare to sue San Francisco and the zoo, saying they suffered serious injuries and emotional harm during the tiger attack.

The attacked killed 17-year-old Carlos Sousa Jr.
