FAIRFIELD, Calif. -- Investigators and clean-up crews picked through the burned out remains of an abandoned Travis Air Force base neighborhood Monday after a dramatic weekend firestorm destroyed some 230 vacant houses and threatened other areas of the sprawling complex.Authorities said investigators were trying to determine the cause of the fire. The eight-alarm blaze started as a grassfire off base around 3:15 p.m., but jumped onto air force base property, damaging or destroying 190 unoccupied single-unit homes and 40 unoccupied duplexes, according to Major Vanessa Hillman. No occupied housing had to be evacuated, but residents were ordered to stay indoors with the windows closed to protect themselves from the smoke. Electricity had been restored to the base on Sunday. About 217 firefighters from the Air Force, the Fairfield Fire Department and three county departments battled the blaze, which scorched 12.4 acres of the base. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while combating the fire and were treated and released. Travis Air Force Base is located about 38 miles southwest of Sacramento.
