LAFAYETTE, Calif. -- Organizers of a politically charged war memorial featuring more than 4,000 crosses meant to honor each of the soldiers killed in Iraq are adding 600 more to the hillside. Memorial co-founder Jeff Heaton started building the new crosses to include soldiers killed in Afghanistan. Heaton says the memorial, which can be viewed from a busy freeway and a commuter train, is a protest of the Bush administration's war policy. Heaton said he was inspired by the presidential election, especially the presumptive Democratic candidate Barack Obama's pledge to remove troops from Iraq but send more to Afghanistan. The crosses used to bear the names of each dead soldier, but the names prompted protest from some family members and war supporters. Now names only appear on crosses if the soldier's family has given permission.
