Oakland Police Feared Sniper Fire At Shooting Scene

OAKLAND -- One person was killed, two others wounded in separate shootings overnight on the increasingly violent streets of Oakland where fears of possible sniper fire triggered a cautious and large police response to one of the scenes.Sgt. Charles Abdullah said police took a very cautious approach when they responded to a shooting around midnight on Bromley Ave.“All I can say at this point is that in the recent past, several of our officers involved in another incident were apparently fired upon in the same block,” Abdullah said. “We took extra precautions in investigating this incident…We took a numerous amount of officers in …checked the area to make sure there were no additional victims and to make sure we weren’t fired upon as we continued our investigation.”Authorities said the incident began when a woman was wounded by a single gunshot as she drove down Bromley. She was able to continue on to 58th and International were she was able to wave down a police officer.The wounded woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Her condition was unknown.At about 10 p.m., police responded to a shooting in the 1200 block of 65th Avenue. Arriving officers found Oakland resident Jonathan Gonzalez and a second man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said. Both men were taken to Highland Hospital, where Gonzalez was pronounced dead at 2:29 a.m., according to police. He is the 87th person murdered in the city this year.
