Takeover Bandits Pistol-Whip Employees

Posted: 10:55 pm PDT August 22, 2008Updated: 7:37 pm PDT August 25, 2008

The latest in a brazen series of takeover-style robberies of Oakland restaurants and businesses had left two employees nursing minor injuries and bruises Monday after they were pistol-whipped in separate Sunday attacks.

Over the weekend, the pace of violent takeover-style robberies picked up with four taking place since Friday night. The robberies have followed a similar pattern -- two or three hooded bandits target the business around closing time, storm in with at least one gun drawn and then flee with an undisclosed amount of cash.

While Oakland police have released surveillance camera video of Friday’s gunpoint robbery of the Nomad Restaurant, they have not released any description of the suspects or determined the rash of robberies were somehow connected.

On Sunday night, two armed masked suspects stormed into the Full Moon Seafood House in the 2000 block of MacArthur Boulevard around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. They herded five employees into the backroom, robbed them, the restaurant cash register and then pistol-whipped an employee.

Earlier in the day, according to Oakland police, a nail salon employee was also reportedly pistol-whipped in a take-over style robbery around 5 p.m. at the salon in the 6600 block of Telegraph Avenue.

The two robberies followed similar crimes on Friday and Saturday night.

Two masked males robbed a Mama Rosa's Pizza at 2370 High St. on Saturday night at around closing time.

At least one of the two was armed with a gun when they stole money from the pizza place and its employees in the 2300 block of High Street around 10:30 p.m., police said.

No customers were in the store and no injuries were reported, police said.

The Nomad Café at 6500 Shattuck Ave. was robbed in a similar fashion Friday night, just after 10 p.m.
