Firefighters Contain Blaze On Yerba Buena Island

Posted: 2:45 pm PDT August 28, 2008Updated: 5:52 pm PDT August 28, 2008

Firefighters were able to contain a one-alarm blaze burning on the west side of Yerba Buena Island under the Bay Bridge a couple of hours after it started, but one eastbound and one westbound lane of the span remain closed to accomodate emergency vehicles, according to fire department officials.

The fire was reported around 2:10 p.m. A San Francisco fireboat has been dispatched to help fight the blaze, a fire dispatcher said.

The San Francisco Fire Department sent the equivalent of a three-alarm response to Yerba Buena Island Thursday afternoon. San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White says a quick response was necessary to contain the fire.

"On something like this, if we don't make an aggressive attack immediately, it could be threatening structures," said Hayes-While

Now that the fire is contained, crews will remain on the site for hours making sure there are no flare ups.
