UC Berkeley Tree Sitting Site Now Scene Of Archeological Dig

An archeological dig is under way at the site of the planned athletic complex on the U.C. Berkeley campus, where Native American activists claim an Indian burial ground exists.

Crews are drilling 50 holes into the ground under the site of the former oak grove where treesitters had protested for almost two years, hoping to stop the complex.

Archaeological consultant James Allan says they're looking for Native American artifacts. "We're also looking for evidence of habitation which would include broken up bits of shell or discoloration of the soil that would be evidence of food remains."

One former treesitter, Zachary Running Wolf says if any artifacts are found at the site, the university should change its plans to build on the land. "If your great-grandmother is laying in peace would you want us to dig up your great-grandmother?," he asked.

U.C. Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof says the university takes the search seriously. " If anything is found we will be working with representatives of the Native American community to make sure any artifacts or remains are handled with dignity and in accordance with the law."

The archeological dig is expected to last another week. Results of the search should be available around Thanksgiving.
