Cupertino Builds Memorial For Dead Cyclists

Posted: 5:25 pm PDT October 18, 2008Updated: 9:45 pm PDT October 18, 2008

A silent and somber Saturday morning ride brought about 150 cyclists up Stevens Canyon Rd. in Cupertino, as a tribute to 31-year-old Kristy Gough from Oakland and 29-year-old Matt Peterson of San Francisco.

The two cyclists died in March after being hit by a Santa Clara County Sheriff's patrol car that drifted across the lane.

“You go through an anger process and now it's just that you remember you're not going to have any new memories with her,” said Rip Gough, Gough’s father. “So that's kind of the hard part.”

For most family members, this was the first time returning here since the accident.

“We were very close she was my best friend,” said Karen Clarkson, Gough’s mother. “It's hard for me to come up here.”

Just up the road from the accident, the City of Cupertino unveiled a memorial Saturday with two name plaques and a white bicycle intended to represent "a ghost bike."

“Seeing the memorial to me was reassuring that people won't forget,” said Daniel Brasse, who biked with Gough on her cycling team.”Each time they ride pass, they'll see it and remember it.”

Brasse, 42, was riding just seconds behind Gough and Peterson that fateful day. Most Sundays he travels the same training route.

“Every race I've done this year, they've been with me. I don't think that will ever go away,” said Brasse. “I don't think I want it to go away.”

Gough’s cycling team now bares her "K.G." initials on their uniforms.

Sheriff’s Deputy James Council has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter for the deaths.

Matt Peterson's father John says to him- the trial is not important.

“I have to believe it was an accident. It was tragic. It was unintentional. It was just one of those things that happened,” said John Peterson. “I feel badly for him; I'm sure that he hurts.”
