Nader, Several Hundred Supporters Memorialize Camejo

Posted: 5:33 pm PST November 23, 2008Updated: 6:27 pm PST November 23, 2008

Peter Camejo died in September but planned this memorial service before then. It drew several hundred people who celebrated his life.

Among the historic speeches, pictures and souvenirs of his 50-year political history were the people who will never forget Camejo.

”As for me I just can't imagine life without Peter,” said Morella Camejo, Camejo’s wife.

Camejo's memorial service was held on the U.C Berkeley campus, a school that ironically expelled Camejo for his opposition to the Vietnam War in the ‘60s. From then on he was an outspoken advocate for social justice.

“It didn't matter if you shined shoes or were the AIG CEO -- he knew how to talk to you about politics and move you a bit,” said Matt Gonzalez, the 2008 vice presidential candidate.

Camejo co-founded the California Green Party and was a three-time candidate for governor. He ran for president in 1976 and vice president along with independent Ralph Nader in 2004.

“There’s no one that I know who fought such a multitude of fights against all kinds of injustices in the Western Hemisphere, US and California,” said Ralph Nader, a 2008 presidential candidate.

Camejo was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2007 and family members say fought that battle with the same strength. He spent the last years of his life dedicated to his family, promoting socially responsible investing and writing the story of his life.

“No one can step into his shoes for what he did,” said Antonio Camejo, Camejo’s brother. “There is now a big hole for all of us.”

Camejo was able to finish his autobiography just before his death it will be published sometime within the next year.
