ANTIOCH, Calif. -- A baby girl in Santa Clara, previously thought to be the first Bay Area baby born in 2009, was edged out of the No. 1 spot by a boy in Antioch. Emiliano Martinez was born less than a minute after midnight on the first day of the year, according to Laurie Aguilar, the lead secretary in the women's health unit at Sutter Delta Medical Center. "They thought they had the first over at Kaiser, because they had one at 12:11 a.m.," Aguilar said, describing a friendly competition between Bay Area hospitals to be distinguished by ushering in the first baby of the year. Baby Tera was born to parents Erica Palma and Tirrell Holmes on Thursday at 12:11 a.m. at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center, according to a hospital spokesman. But before that, at 12:01 a.m., Emilio was born in Antioch weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces to parents Ayla and Francisco. "We kind of knew we had the first because of the time," Aguilar said. Both babies and their parents are said to be in excellent health Friday.
