Suspected Gang Member Escapes San Jose Juvenile Hall

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Sheriff's deputies are searching for a suspected gang member who escaped from custody at Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall in San Jose on Thursday night.Gerardo Chavez, 17, was awaiting trial charged with assault with a deadly weapon and gang enhancements when he escaped at about 8:45 p.m., according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.Chavez, described by the sheriff's office as 5 feet 5 inches tall, 212 pounds with black hair and brown eyes, was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and brown pants. His last name is tattooed in cursive on his neck.Chavez is reported to be a known gang member, frequenting the areas of King Road and Cunningham Avenue, and Washington Street near Almaden Road in San Jose.Sheriff's detectives believe Chavez' escape was facilitated by family membersAnyone with information regarding Chavez or his escape is asked to contact Sgt.
