SAN FRANCISCO -- In response to the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Oscar Grant III by a Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer on New Year's Day, two local state legislators said Thursday they plan to introduce legislation requiring public oversight of the BART police force. State Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco/San Mateo and Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco announced their intent, with the support of San Francisco supervisor and former police commissioner David Campos, to author legislation requiring greater accountability and public oversight of BART police. "The recent incident has put a spotlight on BART police and the need for reform," Yee's communications director Adam Keigwin said.
