Abandoned Baby Gorilla At SF Zoo Making Progress

Posted: 3:32 pm PDT March 10, 2009

The San Francisco Zoo's new baby gorilla continues to show signs of healthy development on the eve of an anticipated contest that will determine the infant simian’s new name.

The male western lowland gorilla was born to first-time mother, Monifa, on December 8, but has been raised by human caretakers after his birth mother left the nest and didn’t return to care for or nurse the new infant.

A new video of the baby gorilla released exclusively to KTVU Channel 2 on Tuesday shows the apparently healthy young primate ambling about outside. The gorilla has been hand-reared in an off-exhibit nursery set up in the Jones Family Gorilla Preserve.

Though the gorilla has had an unusual amount of human contact during his first three months of life, veterinary staff has moved forward in a more natural plan by training a surrogate mother named Bawang. He also lives in one of the rooms in the adult building where adult gorillas have constant visual contact with him.

Despite not being on public exhibit, the young gorilla has stirred a great deal of interest. On Wednesday, the baby's father -- "Oscar Jonesy" -- will choose one of five cantaloupes representing the five finalists to determine the baby’s name. The naming contest held by the zoo drew more than 5,300 entries.

The zoo also has set up a baby shower registry for zoo supporters who would like to give the baby gorilla a gift.
