RICHMOND, Calif. -- Police identified a man Wednesday who was killed in a drive-by shooting on Interstate Highway 580 in Richmond on Tuesday afternoon as local rap singer Marcus Russell, Sgt. Bisa French said. Just before the shooting, Russell, a 21-year-old Richmond resident, had been at the Richmond Marina with his 20-year-old girlfriend, where the couple was doing a photo shoot, possibly for a new album cover, French said. The two victims had just left the marina and gotten onto eastbound Highway 580 heading toward Bayview Avenue when, just after 4 p.m., a full-sized red van pulled up along side them. Two men inside the van fired at least 12 rounds at Russell's car, striking Russell and his girlfriend, French said. After being hit, Russell drove off the highway, through a fence and stopped on an adjacent road. Both victims were taken to a local hospital, where Russell died. The woman is expected to survive, French said. She told police she did not know the suspects or why they shot at them, French said. Police are looking into the possibility that the gunmen could have followed the victims from the marina. Detectives are also reviewing surveillance footage from a highway camera in the area, but so far haven't found anything useful to the investigation, French said.
